French company TotalEnergies and Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) have started oil production at the Ikile field located approximately 20km off the coast of Nigeria, as part of the Oil Mining Lease (OML99).

The project will produce 50,000 barrels per day by the end of 2022, helping the West African energy giant revitalise itself after a decline in production over the past two years due to the negative impacts of Covid-19 on the industry, the war in Ukraine, or declining investments.

With calls for the oil and gas industry to step up carbon emission reduction mechanisms, TotalEnergies and NNPC say the project is environmentally friendly, with an estimated emissions rate of less than 4kg CO2.

To reduce the cost of the project, the two operators have attached the project to Amenam’s existing processing, storage and distribution facilities via a 14km pipeline.

“By exploring discoveries close to existing facilities, this project fits in with the company’s strategy to focus on low-cost, low-emission oil projects,” explained Henri-Max Ndong-Nzue, deputy president of TotalEnergies.
