The Line, the city of the future

The Saudi Arabian government has released images of NEOM’s first futuristic eco-city project – The Line. Presented by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, The Line, is an urban development linking the Red Sea coast to the mountains and upper valleys of northeastern Saudi Arabia.

Rectangular in shape, 170 kilometres long, 500 metres high and 200 metres wide, the city is expected to accommodate a total of nine million inhabitants.

This sustainable city has been designed and developed to be car-free, carbon emissions-free and to run on fully renewable energy, with the promise of prioritising the health and well-being of its residents. Residents will have access to all facilities within a five-minute walk, as well as a high-speed train that will take just 20 minutes from one end to the other.

The images reveal two parallel wall-like structures that enclose an open area between them. From the outside, The Line will be clad in a mirrored façade, giving it a unique character. The interior will be built to accommodate buildings, public parks, pedestrian areas, schools, residences and workplaces. Built 500 metres above sea level, this will be the 12th tallest building in the world.

According to the latest information, advanced by Prince Mohammed bin Salman, 1.2 million people are expected to live in NEOM by 2030. This number is expected to rise to nine million by 2045.

“We are committed to a revolution in urbanism that puts people first and is based on a radical change in urban planning. The Line promises to solve the challenges facing humanity in urban life today and will demonstrate alternative ways of living. We cannot ignore the crises in quality of life and the environmental crises facing our world’s cities. NEOM is at the forefront of finding new and creative solutions to this problem,” said Mohammed bin Salman, who is leading this project.
