From November 2023, the new system of entry authorisation for tourists to European Union (EU) countries, the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (Etias), will come into force.

The proposal began to be discussed in 2013, was approved in 2018 and would come into force in 2021, but several delays and postponements, mean that the measure will only come into force in November next year.

The adoption of Etias aims to strengthen security by verifying relevant information of tourists from countries exempt from visa requirements for entry into the European Union. The document will be required for those travelling for tourism (with a stay of up to 90 days).

According to the EU, the Etias is not considered a visa. The permit can be applied for online and most must be granted immediately and must be renewed every three years. If the passport expires, it will need to be renewed.

Among the information requested should be: name, date and place of birth, gender, nationality and passport number. Questions will also be asked about criminal records and presence in conflict zones.
