Africa Finance Corporation has selected two consortia as preferred bidders for the construction of a new railway link between Zambia and Angola, an approximately 830-kilometre project aimed at strengthening connections between Zambia’s Copperbelt and the Port of Lobito.

A consortium comprising Webuild, Mota-Engil and IC İçtaş Construction was selected for the Zambian section, while the section in Angola is expected to be handled by a group formed by Mota-Engil and Odebrecht Engineering and Construction.

Contract negotiations are expected to begin in November, with engineering, procurement and construction agreements due to be concluded within an estimated eight to 12 weeks, depending on the outcome of technical, commercial and legal negotiations.

The future railway is expected to connect Luacano, on Angola’s Benguela Railway network, to Chingola in Zambia, creating a more direct link between the country’s mining regions and Angola’s Atlantic coast.

The infrastructure is expected to carry copper, cobalt, agricultural products and containers, helping to reduce logistics costs, improve cargo flows and strengthen economic integration along the Lobito Corridor.
