Unemployment rate slows in second quarter to 30.2 per cent

In the second quarter of 2022 the unemployment rate in Angola recorded a slight drop in year-on-year terms, to 30.2 per cent, a drop also seen in population aged between 15-24.

According to the Angolan National Statistics Institute’s employment survey, the unemployment rate for the population aged 15 or over was estimated at 30.2 per cent between April and June 2022, 1.5 percentage points lower than in the same period of 2021, corresponding to 46,682 fewer unemployed people.

In quarterly terms, there was a decrease of 0.6 percentage points in relation to the previous quarter (30.8 per cent) and 82,511 less unemployed.

In the 15-24 age group, the unemployment rate rose to 56.7%, compared with 57.7 per cent in the same period last year and 57.2 per cent quarter-to-quarter.

The unemployed youth population increased by 89,278, reflecting the increase in the economically active population, which grew by 4.8 per cent quarter-to-quarter.

There was also an increase of 160,000 employed young people aged between 15 and 24

The unemployment rate in the urban area (40.0 per cent) is around three times higher than in the rural area (14.3 per cent), with a difference of 25.7 percentage points.

In Angola, the majority of employed people are in informal employment (79.3 per cent), of which 70.4 per cent are men and 88.0% are women.

In second term of 2022, the majority of those employed in informal employment were self-employed (49.5 per cent), family workers (29.8%) and workers for own consumption (12.2 per cent).

The unemployed population aged 15 and above was estimated at 4.9 million people (3.1 million aged 15-24).

Still, in second term of 2022, in the universe of the working-age population (persons aged 15 and over), 11.3 million declared that they worked in the reference period in an employed, self-employed job or worked in a family business for at least one hour.

The economically active population aged 15 and over was estimated at 16.3 million people (7.9 million men and 8.3 million women).

The employment rate was estimated at 62.7 per cent, being significantly higher in rural areas than in urban areas (80.6 per cent and 52.4 per cent). The employment rate for youth aged 15-24 years is 36.2 per cent.

However, the data indicates that the age groups 35-44 and 45-54 years old concentrate the largest group of employed persons.

More than half (53.2 per cent) of the employed population is engaged in agriculture, animal production, hunting, forestry and fishing, followed by wholesale and retail trade with 19.1 per cent.
