The Catholic University of Angola is hosting the first Catholic Universities Art Triennial, an international initiative bringing together artists from different countries and encouraging reflection on empathy, identity and the African concept of Ubuntu.
The Angolan exhibition, titled “Exercises in Empathy: Ubuntu,” runs from October 29 to December 20 and forms part of a project promoted under the Vatican’s Dicastery for Culture and Education, with the participation of Catholic universities from three continents.
The programme includes painting, sculpture, photography, film, video, performance and installations, bringing together Angolan and international artists working in contemporary art.
Participants include Kiluanji Kia Henda, Edson Chagas, Mónica de Miranda and Sammy Baloji, while the programme also features talks, workshops, meetings and guided visits.
The main exhibition is taking place at the Catholic University of Angola’s Palanca campus, with additional activities planned at other cultural venues in Luanda. The initiative forms part of an international circuit expected to travel through several cities before culminating in a presentation in Venice in 2027.
