The Durban FilmMart Institute (DFMI) this year established a nine-member Advisory Committee, comprising some of the leading professionals in the global film industry, to guide this institution.

Based on a mix of industry veterans from Africa, Europe and North America, the Committee is tasked with helping DFMI facilitate trade and investment in African content, while assisting African filmmakers to access international markets.

The Advisory Committee comprises Cécile Gérardin, head of drama at Canal Plus International; Dana Sims, talent agent at CAA; Jihan El-Tahri, Emmy-nominated filmmaker and managing director of Dox Box; Judy Kibinge, documentary filmmaker and CEO of Docubox; Mo Abudu, CEO of EbonyLife Group; Roger Ross Williams, Oscar and Emmy-winning filmmaker and founder of One Story Up production company; Steven Adams, founding partner of Alta Global Media; Tendeka Matatu, Netflix’s director of films for sub-Saharan Africa; and Todd Brown, head of international acquisitions at XYZ Films.

This year’s event was the first physical edition of DFMI in two years, due to the interruption caused by the global pandemic.

The programme for this edition focused on the evolution of the industry, the work of inclusion and access to new spaces that drive content creation, with Africa and the African diaspora at the centre of the programme, with the aim of giving mainstream professionals, established independents, emerging and alternative filmmakers the opportunity to work together in order to bring African content to the global market.
