The National Bank of Angola (BNA) has announced that it is investigating allegations that some commercial banks are charging around 6,000 kwanzas for the renewal of Multicaixa debit cards and making the service conditional upon the purchase of personal insurance.
According to the Governor of the BNA, Tiago Dias, if confirmed, these practices constitute a violation of the regulations currently in force.
Speaking to Angola’s public broadcaster RNA on Monday, the governor said the central bank would verify the allegations and, should any irregularities be confirmed, the institutions involved would face the appropriate sanctions. He added that the BNA would also take the necessary measures to restore normality in the banking system.
The governor further clarified that there is no regulation issued by the National Bank of Angola requiring customers to purchase insurance in order to renew a Multicaixa card, stressing that such a requirement has no legal basis under the rules established by the banking regulator.
