Acceptance tests of equipment to prepare for the start-up of the first two turbines at the Luachimo hydroelectric dam in Angola Lunda Norte Northern Province, began last week, an official announced.

Mr Joaquim Costa, its director for refurbishment and expansion work, explained that the two turbines, with capacity to produce 17 megawatts of electricity, were already installed.

He also announced the construction of two more turbines with the same capacity, work on which, he added, was over 60 per cent complete.

Estimated at over $ 212 m and funded by a Chinese credit line, the work will help increase the power capacity provided by the infrastructure from 8.4 to 34 megawatts.

The start of the project, made up of four 8.5 megawatt generators, will total 34 megawatts, with capacity to reach 186,000 residents of the provincial capital, Dundo, and the municipalities of Cambulo and Lucapa, as well as the localities of Fucauma, Cassanguidi, Luxilo and Calonda.
