Multinational company Azule Energy has signed four engineering contracts worth $1 b with representatives of the Angolan energy sector to build exploration, production and treatment platforms for non-associated gas.

The agreement signed on August 11 in Luanda and aims initially to build an offshore gas production platform at the Maboqueiro field and an onshore gas treatment platform at the Quiluma field, Angolan state-owned oil agency Sonangol’s CEO told journalists.

The construction of the Maboqueiro and Quiluma platforms, lasting four years, includes two offshore wellhead platforms, an onshore gas processing unit and a connection to the Angola LNG unit for the commercialisation of condensates and gas, with the loading of liquefied natural gas and the first exploration due to take place in 2026.

Azule Energy is a joint venture between BP and Eni, since 1 August, 2022, and is now Angola’s biggest oil and gas producer, with 200,000 barrels per day and plans to increase production to 250,000 barrels in the next five years.

Sonangol CEO Mr Sebastião Martins also noted the possibility of producing fertilisers and the consequent rise in agricultural production in the country.

“These are the first two fields, Quiluma and Maboqueiro, but there are other fields in the pipeline, which will continue to be developed using the entire infrastructure from this first phase of these two fields that will go into production very soon,” he noted.

Recent figures published by Petroangola indicate that in July production of associated natural gas stood at 85.4 million cubic feet.
