Africa’s busiest cargo airports

Airports Council International (ACI) Africa has listed the busiest cargo airports in the continent in a report.

The annual report showed that 2.15 million tonnes of cargo passed through African airports, representing about 1.7 per cent of global cargo volume.

  1. Jomo Kenyatta International Airport

Located on the outskirts of Nairobi, it is the gateway to and from East Africa. There are more than 40 passenger airlines and 25 cargo airlines at it, and it handled about 363,204 tonnes of cargo in 2021.

  1. Cairo International Airport

Cairo International Airport is the largest and busiest airport in Egypt, serving as the main hub for EgyptAir, Nile Air and over 40 airlines. It has a cargo capacity of 400,000 tonnes per year, and in 2021 handled 333,536 tonnes of cargo.

  1. Oliver Reginald Tambo International Airport

Tambo (formerly Johannesburg International Airport) is the largest airport in South Africa and the hub of South African Airways. In 2021, the airport ranked third in cargo volumes, with 304,018 tonnes passing through it.

  1. Addis Ababa Bole International Airport

Addis Ababa Bole International Airport is the main hub of Ethiopian Airlines. This international airport was ranked as the fourth busiest airport after handling 226,417 tonnes of cargo last year.

  1. Murtala Muhammed Airport Two

Air Peace Hopper is the largest airline operating at the airport without a national carrier. The Nigerian-based airport handled 204,649 tonnes in 2021.

  1. Entebbe International Airport

Entebbe International Airport is the largest and only international airport in Uganda. During the period under review, 65,115 tonnes of cargo transited through this airport.

  1. Mohammed V Airport

It is the busiest airport in Morocco, based in Casablanca. It is the main hub for the national carrier Royal Air Maroc and Air Arabia Maroc. The airport recorded 64,373 tonnes of cargo in 2021.

  1. Kotoka International Airport

Ghana’s only international airport is served by several cargo airlines, including Air Ghana, Cargolux, DHL Aviation, Emirates Sky Cargo, Ethiopian Airlines Cargo, and Qatar Airways Cargo. The annual cargo traffic in 2021 was 46,699 tonnes.

  1. Blaise Diagne International Airport

The main cargo airlines operating from the airport are DHL Aviation and Magma Aviation. The airport recorded 37,225 tonnes of annual cargo traffic last year.
