According to the former US president, his daughter’s choice did not surprise him.
When debuting her film ‘The Heart’ at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival in February, Barack and Michelle Obama’s 26-year-old daughter did not use her last name. Instead, she opted to use her middle name – Ann. According to the former US president, his daughter’s choice did not come as a surprise.
“The challenge for us is to stop providing them with any kind of help,” Barack Obama admitted on the October 29 episode of ‘The Pivot Podcast.’
When he noticed that his eldest daughter, Malia, chose to be credited without her last name, the former president warned her that people would still know they were related.
“I was like, ‘You know they’re going to know who you are, right?'” he explained. “And she replied, ‘You know what? I want people to watch the movie for the first time and not make any association [with the Obama family].’ And I think my daughters make an effort every day to ensure that isn’t encouraged.”
Additionally, Barack Obama acknowledged that both daughters have gained more public attention since reaching adulthood and exploring their passions.
