“The challenge lies in ensuring that part of the financial flows generated by these projects is channeled into the economy, promoting the development of local content,” he noted.
The CEO of the African Bank of Oman (ABO), Dinis Mendes, argued that structured financing and strategic partnerships are essential to realize the potential of the mining and oil and gas sectors in Angola.
Speaking at the seminar “Business Opportunities in Angola,” the executive stated that “the investment phase of a mining project typically represents several billion dollars and has a significant multiplier effect on the economy, particularly through the creation of a local content ecosystem, involving Angolan companies in areas such as logistics, construction, services, and operational support.”
He also highlighted ABO’s role as an investment facilitator and strategic partner in supporting large-scale projects, particularly in terms of structuring financing and connecting to capital markets.
“The African Bank of Oman aims to position itself as a platform to support investors and operators, contributing to the structuring of financing solutions, including project finance, and supporting companies in their relationship with the Angolan banking system, particularly in opening accounts, foreign exchange frameworks, and operational needs associated with their activities in the country,” he added.
Regarding the perception of risk associated with the sector, Dinis Mendes emphasized that it is mainly concentrated in the initial exploration phase. Once economically viable reserves are identified, projects are then based on structured and internationally recognized financial models, capable of attracting financing from financial institutions and capital markets.
“The challenge is to ensure that a significant portion of the financial flows generated by these projects is channeled into the Angolan economy, promoting the development of local content and contributing to the strengthening of the real economy,” he said.
