The United Kingdom has banned Isabel dos Santos from re-entering the country and frozen the Angolan billionaire’s assets under the global anti-corruption sanctions regime, the British government announced on its official website.
In a statement, the British government also announced sanctions against Ukrainian oligarch Dmytro Firtash and Latvian oligarch Aivars Lembergs.
All three are accused of “stealing wealth from their countries for personal gain.”
In addition to Isabel dos Santos, sanctions effective today also target her associate and friend Paula Oliveira and former Sonangol CFO Sarju Raikundalia.
According to the statement, these sanctions mark the first step in the Foreign Office’s new campaign to combat corruption and illicit financing.
It is worth noting that Isabel dos Santos, whose father, José Eduardo dos Santos, governed Angola for 38 years until 2017, has faced corruption allegations in Angola and other countries for years.
The businesswoman denies the accusations, claiming she is the target of a long-standing political vendetta.
