{"id":9899,"date":"2026-05-18T12:25:31","date_gmt":"2026-05-18T12:25:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.negociosdeangola.com\/angola-e-rdc-avancam-com-projecto-energetico-historico-de-2-000-mw\/"},"modified":"2026-05-18T12:48:48","modified_gmt":"2026-05-18T12:48:48","slug":"angola-and-drc-advance-historic-2000-mw-energy-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.negociosdeangola.com\/en\/angola-and-drc-advance-historic-2000-mw-energy-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Angola and DRC Advance Historic 2,000 MW Energy Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"61\" data-end=\"335\">Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have taken a decisive step toward implementing one of Africa\u2019s largest energy interconnection projects, with plans to export more than 2,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity generated in Angola to the Congolese market.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"337\" data-end=\"641\">Progress on the negotiations was confirmed during a meeting held on Thursday, the 14th, at the Presidential Palace in Luanda, where the President of the Republic, <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Jo\u00e3o Louren\u00e7o<\/span><\/span>, received the DRC\u2019s Minister of Water Resources and Electricity, <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Teddy Lwamba Muba Sakombi<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"643\" data-end=\"851\">The meeting marked the beginning of the execution phase of the regional project led by the Meridia Energy Consortium, formed by <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Somagec<\/span><\/span> and <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Averi Finance<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"853\" data-end=\"1154\">According to information released after the meeting, Somagec will oversee engineering studies, technical feasibility assessments, transmission line routing, and environmental impact evaluations. Averi Finance will be responsible for the financial structuring and capital mobilization of the operation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1156\" data-end=\"1399\">The project will be financed through a fully private project finance model, without the use of public funds or sovereign guarantees \u2014 an approach still considered uncommon in large-scale cross-border energy transmission projects across Africa.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1401\" data-end=\"1809\">The initiative includes the construction of two electricity transmission lines. The main line will connect Malanje, Saurimo, and Luau in Angola to the Congolese cities of Kolwezi and Fungurume, covering approximately 1,450 kilometers and crossing the border through Dilolo. The second line will link Soyo to Inga over a distance of 180 kilometers, connecting Angola to Africa\u2019s largest hydroelectric complex.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1811\" data-end=\"2111\">Project promoters stated that the concession has already been granted by Congolese authorities and is awaiting final approval from Angolan authorities before construction can officially begin. The Soyo\u2013Inga line is expected to start within the coming days, with completion projected within 18 months.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2113\" data-end=\"2411\">Meridia Energy also announced that it has already signed agreements with Angola\u2019s National Electricity Transmission Network (RNT), ensuring the integration of the new infrastructure into the national grid and the expansion of electricity distribution capacity to the eastern regions of the country.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2413\" data-end=\"2609\">During the meeting, the Congolese minister emphasized the strategic importance of the partnership for the DRC, stating that Angolan electricity could benefit both businesses and local communities.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2611\" data-end=\"2881\">Despite the enormous hydroelectric potential of the Inga Dam \u2014 considered one of the continent\u2019s largest energy reserves \u2014 Teddy Sakombi stressed the need for the DRC to diversify its electricity supply sources, identifying Angola as an essential partner in that effort.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2883\" data-end=\"3144\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">The operation strengthens Angola\u2019s position as a regional energy exporter and expands its influence in Africa\u2019s energy market, while the DRC seeks to secure stable electricity capacity to meet the needs of a population estimated at more than 100 million people.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have taken a decisive step toward implementing one of Africa\u2019s largest energy interconnection projects, with plans to export more than 2,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity generated in Angola to the Congolese market.
