Food Life is to invest three million dollars in the construction of an agro-industrial unit in the municipality of Camanongue, Moxico province, with the capacity to process 20,000 tonnes of rice a year, whose supply is guaranteed by a Memorandum of Understanding signed with the Agrarian Development Institute (IDA), covering five thousand smallholder farmers by the third year of the project’s implementation.<\/p>\n
The announcement was made by Food Life’s executive director, Osvaldo Jo\u00e3o, who specified that the plant is due to be completed within seven months and to generate 150 jobs, of which 60 are direct and more than 90 indirect.<\/p>\n
The memorandum signed with the IDA establishes a cooperation mechanism for the purchase and collection of rice produced by smallholder farmers enrolled in public support programmes for the sector.<\/p>\n
In the first phase, the agreement will benefit two thousand smallholder farmers, a figure expected to rise to five thousand producers by the third year of the project, with a further three thousand farmers included in the second phase.<\/p>\n
Beyond guaranteeing a regular supply of raw material to the factory, the document creates a stable market for smallholder output, offering greater predictability in the sale of harvests and encouraging an increase in cultivated areas and agricultural productivity.<\/p>\n
According to Osvaldo Jo\u00e3o, the project was designed to establish a sustainable relationship between industry and family producers.<\/p>\n
“Our vision is to build a sustainable value chain in which the smallholder farmer has the assurance that his product will be bought in an organised market,” he said.<\/p>\n
With the memorandum signed with the Agrarian Development Institute, the official added, “we are creating the conditions for thousands of producers to increase their output with confidence, improve their incomes and take an active part in the country’s economic development”.<\/p>\n
The new plant represents the first step towards the industrialisation of Moxico-Leste province and its main objective is to add value to the region’s rice production chain, promoting the integration of family farming and the agri-food industry.<\/p>\n
The venture should likewise strengthen food security and the economy of the east of the country, in a region where rice output has largely been sold on without local processing.<\/p>\n
The project also foresees a second phase of expansion, comprising the installation of a silo complex and processing units for beans, maize and animal feed, as well as an extruder for processing soya and sunflower.<\/p>\n
Food Life currently carries out farming operations on three estates located in the provinces of Malanje, Moxico and Cuando.<\/p>\n
In Moxico, the company runs a rice production support programme involving some 130 agricultural cooperatives, a structure that will underpin supply to the future Camanongue unit.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
