They demonstrate our ability to anticipate future challenges, improve operational efficiency and prepare the country’s main port for a new generation of logistics services.”

The minister said the port’s operational results in recent years show that its transformation is well underway. Through September 2025, the Port of Luanda recorded a 23% increase in ship traffic.

He added that the port handled approximately 294,000 containers and recorded a 59% increase in vehicle throughput. During the third quarter of 2025 alone, cargo volumes exceeded one million tonnes, “confirming the port’s central role in supplying the country and supporting Angola’s economic activity.”

According to Abreu, the public infrastructure continues to establish itself as one of the region’s leading logistics platforms while strengthening its commitment to innovation, sustainability and workforce development.

He said these performance indicators confirm the Port of Luanda’s growing importance for both Angola and the wider region, fully justifying continued investment in its expansion and modernisation.

“Economic growth requires greater responsiveness. It requires resilient infrastructure, smarter systems and logistics solutions capable of meeting the evolving needs of businesses and citizens,” he said.

Abreu also highlighted the importance of the three newly inaugurated projects. He described the electrical substation as a strategic investment that will enhance the security and reliability of port operations, while the innovation and technology building represents another step towards creating a “smarter and more digital port.”

The new coastal shipping terminal, he added, will play a significant role in the future of Angola’s logistics sector. Given the country’s vast territory and extensive coastline, expanding coastal shipping is viewed as a key strategy to reduce transport costs.

However, when asked about the cost of the new infrastructure, Abreu again described the figures as “irrelevant,” arguing that the focus should instead be on the benefits the projects will deliver to the population and the economy.

“What matters are the benefits. We must understand that logistics costs—not only in Angola but across Africa—are four to five times higher than those recorded in other parts of the world. Talking about large investment figures is not important. What matters are the objectives and the impact these projects will have on our people and on our economy,” he told reporters.

The Port of Luanda’s management also declined to disclose the total value of the investments.

Angola’s Minister of Transport on Wednesday defended continued investment in the modernisation of the Port of Luanda, which recorded a 23% increase in ship traffic through September 2025, while describing as “irrelevant” questions about the cost of three projects inaugurated […]

[69,79,73

post-10083","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-business","category-first-block","category-transport-logistics
["GET
